Nonwoven fiber barriers for control of cabbage maggot and onion maggot (Diptera: Anthomyiidae).
We investigated the use of nonwoven fiber barriers for control of cabbage maggot, Delia radicum (L.), and onion maggot, D. antiqua (Meigen). The barriers consist of arrangements of minute fibers loosely intertwined in "web" form. Results from a greenhouse experiment showed that manually applied graphite fibers placed at the base of broccoli plants reduced the number of D. radicum eggs by 64-98%...

Wireworms are a soil-inhabiting crop pest. Larvae attack many crops, particularly potatoes, and even low populations can cause an economic level of damage. In the UK, high wireworm populations are traditionally associated with long-term grass leys (Parker and Howard, 2001). In the case of organic production, potato crops frequently follow a long-term fertility-building grass ley. Organically gr...

The primitive, carrion-breeding habit of blowflies has been known, recorded and used for medical purposes for centuries past. The aboriginal Ngemba tribe of New South Wales, Australia commonly used maggots to clean suppurating or gangrenous wounds, a practice which they traced back to their remote ancestors [1]. The Hill people of Northern Burma were observed during World War II placing maggots...
متن کاملMyiasis: maggot infestation.
Myiasis is a condition in which fly maggots feed off, and develop in, the tissues of living organisms. True myiasis results from files deliberately laying eggs in or on the tissues. There are two forms of myiasis: obligate, in which it is necessary for the maggots to feed on living tissues, and facultative, where files opportunistically take advantage of wounds or degenerative necrotic conditio...
متن کاملMaggot learning and Synapsin function.
Drosophila larvae are focused on feeding and have few neurons. Within these bounds, however, there still are behavioural degrees of freedom. This review is devoted to what these elements of flexibility are, and how they come about. Regarding odour-food associative learning, the emerging working hypothesis is that when a mushroom body neuron is activated as a part of an odour-specific set of mus...
